Shopify, Bigcommerce, Magento and the NBA Playoffs

The NBA playoffs are here and I couldn’t be happier. Granted, I may be a bit spoiled here in Cleveland with my team making it to the finals for the past three years (please stay Lebron, PLEASE!!) but even when the Cavs stunk, I looked forward to the NBA playoffs.

The regular season is fun and played at a pretty high level, but playoff basketball is what separates the men from the boys. The stakes are higher and the defense is tighter. Teams you thought were really good get exposed by the ones that are truly great. To win in the regular season you can get by with being good, but when you’re in the playoffs, you need to be amazing. There’s just no other way to survive.

That’s kind of like Shopify and Bigcommerce vs. Magento.

Shopify and Bigcommerce are great regular season teams. If you want to run a small business they are really powerful platforms that get the job done. Your site will work and perform all the basic tasks you need.

Scaling your business will be the issue. When the playoffs come around will you be ready?

As your company grows and you need to be on a site that looks unique and has an endless amount of customizations and integrations, Shopify and Bigcommerce will not be able to hold up. Not to mention you’ll be paying a per transaction fee — a cost structure that is counter intuitive to growth.

Magento is built for the playoffs. It’s the most scalable platform on the market. With a rich feature set and a vetted marketplace, there’s pretty much nothing you can’t do on Magento.

I hear from people all the time that they are happy on Shopify, and I’m sure they are. They’re running a small business that will most likely never grow too much. Magento is the platform of the entrepreneur, designed for people who are focused on growing their business, ready to play playoff basketball.

So what’s the answer to Shopify and Bigcommerce vs. Magento?

That depends on your business goals. If you’re looking to maintain a small business I would recommend Shopify or Bigcommerce. But if you’re looking to grow and increase your revenue, those platforms will not be able to grow with you, unlike Magento which is built to scale.

Can’t wait for tipoff – Go Cavs!!
